"I'd also note, and this is important, that the sound reproduction is first-rate. There are no bad seats in this venue." - Chicago Tribune on I Left My Heart @Mercury Theater

"Special applause goes to sound designer and engineer Carl Wahlstrom who sees to it that every one of Ashman’s inspired lyrics is crystal clear. (I only wish he had also worked on Menken’s show at the Auditorium, where the miking, as well as the composer’s diction, could have used some help.)" - WTTW Chicago on Little Shop of Horrors @Mercury Theater
MIXING
Carl began mixing as a teenager, mixing music on Tascam 8 track machines and small P.A. systems in Maine basements. After relocating to Chicago, Carl started mixing professionally while interning at Schubas Tavern. Some of his favorite nights have been spent mixing local bands like Cafe Racer or Fee Lion at Schubas. In 2015, Carl completed his BA in Audio Arts and Acoustics and was immediately hired as Mercury Theater Chicago's resident sound designer and engineer. Carl spent five years as Mercury's main engineer where he mixed hundreds of performances of shows like Avenue Q, Little Shop of Horrors, Hair, and a Jeff Award winning production of Spamalot. Although live mixing has taken up most of his time, Covid-19 resulted in allotting more time to studio mixing and record production. In 2020, Carl mixed singles for Nila Kyoung-Mi, Brandon Pisano, and Secret Wish. Carl is currently a freelance mix engineer, producer and sound designer based in Chicago.
